MJA were engaged to redevelop the exiting Subiaco Church of Christ. The existing church and supporting administrative facilities had been remodelled and added to over a long period of time. As the congregation and community services increased the existing facility had become functionally inefficient within the space available. The clients brief was to create a modern and more engaging street presence on this prominent site in Subiaco.
The existing Church auditorium is to remain, with the adhoc exterior built envelope to be removed and reinstated with an embracing built form, engaging both Bagot Road to the South and Rowland Street to the West.
The proposal seeks to identify the prominence of this corner site with a two storey, oval entrance statement which becomes the interior distribution and Lobby for the Church Auditorium.
The ground floor level will have a café, children’s activity spaces and reception, while the upper level will have Church administration offices and flexible activity spaces.
The material palette is restrained yet textural, utilising a combination of limestone blocks, textured render, porcelain tile cladding, expressed steel and anodised aluminium screening.
