During 2016 MJA_studio undertook a study of sites in the Perth CBD for new primary and secondary schools. The secondary school proposal was briefed by the Department of Education for a school of 1400 pupils. The study concluded with a campus style approach to the 1 hectare site currently occupied by the WA Housing Authority.
The scheme proposes the conversion of a large commercial building and the adaptive re-use of ‘The Perth Girls Orphanage’, one of the city’s most loved heritage buildings. Demolishing a small commercial building on Plain Street enabled the construction of new building running the width of a city block that provides large volume and specialist teaching spaces.
The school is centred on a large courtyard open space that is the social and cultural heart of the ‘campus style’ school. Additional outside spaces are on the roof of the new building on Plain Street that also houses a basement car park.
The proposal re-introduces state education back to the City of Perth.
